What is Aloe Vera?

Aloe Vera is a perennial plant belonging to the lily family. The leaves are where the healing 'gel' ingredient lie. In 1500BC, Egyptians recorded the use of Aloe as a treatment for burns, infections and parasites. Cleopatra is said to have considered it as the most important part of her beauty routine, referring to aloe as "the plant of immortality", because it kept her skin looking young and fresh.

Aloe Vera has a complex structure, and contains more than 75 ingredients that interact with one another to bring about its famed health benefits. These include saponins, which have cleansing and antiseptic properties, lignin, which helps other substances penetrate the skin, and anthraquinones, which have mildly laxative and analgesic effects. When you drink Aloe Vera or apply the topical creams its healing properties, ie anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effect, all work together.  There are also about 30 vitamins and minerals in aloe as well as amino acids and enzymes making it a 'Cocktail of Nutrients'.

How Does Aloe Vera Work?

Aloe Vera works in two main areas: firstly on body surfaces and membranes (referred to anatomically as epithelial tissue) and secondly on the immune system. It is remarkably effective in both these areas, but it is important to realise that aloe vera is not a panacea or 'cure all'.

Effect on Tissue:  An epithelium is defined as 'a layer of cells lining the surface of the body or a cavity that connects with it'. The skin is our largest epithelial surface and both the hairs and nails that grow from it are epithelial in origin and so are affected by aloe vera. Epithelium becomes a mucuous membrane inside the mouth, nose, sinuses, and throat. Epithelium also lines the gullet, the stomach, the intestines, the genital tract and the lungs. Where any of these tiusses are damaged, aloe vera can exert a remarkable effect helping to regenerate tissue and promote healing. People who drink these aloe vera drinking gels regularly find that their hair grows faster, becomes stronger and more luxuriant. In the quest for solutions to split ends and fewer broken nails, aloe vera can play a valuable role.

It possesses a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and broad anti-microbial activity. When applied topically it has the ability to penetrate deeply into the skin, where it stimulates the fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin. It encourages them to replicate themselves faster than they would normally. This speeds up the healing of damaged skin or membranes. Research has shown that aloe vera can increase the rate of healing by 30%. Our hair, skin and beauty products containing aloe vera are popular for these reasons.
